Overall it's been a decade-long project, researching and then photographing in 10 countries. Can you tell me about African Studies?Įdward Burtynsky: I was reading that China was beginning to offshore to Africa, and I thought that would be really interesting to follow. We see the results of that far, far away in a natural landscape made unnatural by our activities. Gaia Vince: With your pictures we see the results of our consumption habits or our lifestyles, in our cities. The writer Gaia Vince, whose book Nomad Century was published in 2022, interviewed Burtynsky for BBC Culture about his latest project, African Studies.Īfrican Studies is now collected in a book and is on display at Flowers Gallery, Hong Kong until. For more than 40 years, the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky has recorded the impact of humans on the Earth in large-scale images that often resemble abstract paintings.

I’ve been hammering away so long at/ it, sweating blood like a slave at a/ pyramid-construction site, that I don’t/ even have to try anymore: every/ word I touch metamorphoses into// poetry. You see me/ doggedly hammering away at the/ keyboard, typing out a, 1,000-page un-/ readable document without missing/ a single punctuation but you don’t/ know that in my bedside drawer is a/ manuscript of un-publishable poetry,/ written out in a careful hand with green/ ink on yellow paper.// Do you know how long it has taken me to type out these poems?” Das Gupta’s confidence and his take on poetry strike at the outset, as he writes: “ I’m more obstinate than the/ underground train/ tunneling its way through the rocky ab-/ -domen of the city. This first collection of poems is gauged by a sophisticated heart. He rightly propounds: “One of assets is an ability to rhyme and metricise naturally and unobtrusively, harnessing the way we talk at moments of heightened emotion, all that while pulling off a conversational precision, down to semicolons in dialogue.” In the preface to the collection Das Gupta writes a long poem titled “Obstinacy,” a soliloquy, where he asks: “… You think you know me?/ You’ve no fucking idea how lucid/ and dangerous I can be. Missing You, Metropolis With humor and the serious collectors delight, Gary Jackson imagines the comic-book worlds of Superman, Batman, and the X-Men alongside the veritable worlds of Kansas, racial isolation, and the gravesides of a sister and a friend. Let me talk about Visceral Metropolis now: The book starts with an incisive foreword by Philip Nikolayev. The wipers slid silently back into position leaving the vetrogel to finish drinking. They scooped out a chamber inside them to keep themselves safe from the thorns. These huge prickly spheres were sometimes used by the Ghmor – the nomads of the wind – to cross the vast expanses of the subtropical region of World-9 where they lived. An interminable sea of yellow interrupted now and again by vast balls of tumbleweed sweeping across the surface. But these had been serious enough to set off alarms and to put the crew on edge.įor over six weeks all they had seen were sand dunes and sun-scorched terrain. The sudden loss of engine power had caused some minor problems steering the ship. There had been trouble the previous night and the one before that. The first day of the fourth month of the voyage was a cloudy Wednesday which promised rain before nightfall. The long blades of the wipers swung slowly back and forth across the windows of the bridge, feeding the vetrogel screen a mixture of alcalines and mineral salts. Lifting his cap a fraction, the Sandguard ran his fingers over his smooth head. The begining of the american edition and some amazing illustrations by Franco Brambilla… A steampunk story set in a poisonous world where huge trucks the size of ships plow across the treacherous sands. There's something about this that just captivated me, and although the story drags a little bit in the middle, this was so enjoyable and a book I imagine I will be think about a lot for a long time. Getting to see Lily live in this house and experience everything that goes on there is just amazing. I especially found the friendship between the main characters (Lily and Eva) to be really interesting, because it captures two girls growing into women, which is often a very intense and slightly painful experience.Īlthough we know this is set in 1930's Melbourne and we get glimpses into the art world of that era, what creates the true atmosphere is the house most of the story plays out in it's captured so wonderfully and vividly. The characters in this book are just fascinating and getting to see the dynamic of the different relationships is astonishing, it's so well captured. I thought this was such an interesting and compelling story, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Easily one of the most overlooked yet brilliant characters, Vetinari is allowed more “screen-”time in this book and makes for one of the more interesting perspectives in the book.īut, as much as I would love a book entirely devoted to Vetinari, this book is first and foremost Moist von Lipwig's book. One of the reasons Moist is such a great character is because of the back and forth that he has with Vetinari. However, though the noose is pulled and the door gives way, Moist soon finds himself sitting opposite Lord Vetinari, the Patrician of Ankh-Morpork. We are immediately introduced to Moist von Lipwig, a successful con artist who has recently been captured. Moist first made his appearance in Pratchett's 33rd Discworld novel, Going Postal. However over the past several years he has invested time in planting new characters into his Discworld, and one of the greatest inclusions – without a doubt – has been Moist von Lipwig. He would often return to Sam Vimes, the Witches, Death or Rincewind. For a long time, Terry Pratchett focused very intently on several groups of characters. Sugrue worked as a reporter at the former Naugatuck Daily News, before being hired by the New York Herald Tribune newspaper. His first reading was given in Virginia Beach on June 7, 1927, at the request of Hugh Lynn. After meeting Edgar Cayce, he decided that there was no deception. Sugrue made the five-hour trip from Lexington to Virginia Beach with Hugh Lynn, thinking that he would debunk a fraud. The subjects included diagnosis and treatment of illness, finding hidden items, universal laws, karma, and even past lives. Edgar Cayce had the strange gift of going into a trance-like state and providing answers to questions. It was there he was introduced to classmate Hugh Lynn Cayce, the eldest son of Edgar and Gertrude Cayce. Īfter graduating in 1924 from Naugatuck High School where dancing was "his favorite pastime" according to a yearbook, Sugrue worked briefly as a teller for the Naugatuck Savings Bank, before attending Washington and Lee University in Virginia, where he graduated with bachelor's and master's degrees in English. His early memories of life in the borough's Irish section were captured in a 1940 autobiographical novel, Such Is the Kingdom, which was recast as the fictional "Kelly Hill". He grew up in a staunch Irish Catholic background. Thomas Sugrue was born in a house on Ward Street in Naugatuck, Connecticut, in 1907 to Michael and Mary Sugrue.
